The next morning, I woke up alone. Ellis had to get down to the parade early to set up security. Between maintaining some kind of order at homecoming and investigating the death of Ashley Starling, Ellis could use more than twenty-four hours this homecoming Friday.

At least I could help him with the investigation.

I didn’t like the boldness of the library intruder last night, and I shuddered to think what might have happened if Melody had gotten in the way.

I dressed in white jeans and a festive red V-neck sweater with faux pearl earrings. My red boots clomped as I walked out onto the back porch with a cup of coffee. Lucy dashed past me, down the steps, and out into the yard. I’d retied the red bow on her butt above her tail. She deserved to be festive, too.

Mom banged out of the RV, wearing red slacks and a white sweater with a Sugarland Biscuits patch sewn on over her heart.

“Hungry?” I leaned a hip against the porch rail. “I’ve got cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing.” I’d made them just in case and even heated the oven. “Ready in a jiff.”

She stifled a yawn and held up her own mug of coffee, which was a shame because I’d bought a special morning blend from the Happy Bean just for her. “I’d rather get going,” she said apologetically. “I hardly slept at all last night thinking of Ashley and the parade.”

I glanced down at my watch. It was only seven thirty in the morning. The parade didn’t start until nine.

Mom stopped at the bottom of the porch steps, and I realized she already had her purse slung over her shoulder, ready to go. “Carl took off at dawn to hook up the Roan’s float. They had to be in line an hour ago, and we need to get going if we want to get a good spot to do some investigating.”

She was sure hopping this morning.

“Let me see if Frankie’s ready,” I said, heading down.

“Frankie will never be ready,” the ghost’s voice sounded in my ear.

“Great idea to bring in the mob,” Mom said, gripping her mug with both hands. “Your gangster buddy can help you sniff out Ashley.”

“I’m not a bloodhound,” Frankie said, shimmering into focus next to her. “Tell this lady that’s not what ghosts do.”

I was still trying to figure out for myself what ghosts actually did.

Still, I was glad to see Frankie had regained all of his limbs. He looked like his old, grumpy self again. I’d have to thank Molly when I saw her.

“Think we can pick your girlfriend up a little early?” I asked him.

“I told her I’d meet her down there,” he said, straightening his tie as Lucy came charging from behind the apple tree. She took one look at my ghost, let out a huffy grunt, and tossed grass with a kick of her back legs as she dashed straight under the porch.

“I don’t think she likes your plan,” I said to Frankie.
